Why a ride costs more in one app than another
A ride’s price is calculated on demand, from the trip and from the balance between riders and drivers at that moment. Each app runs that calculation with its own drivers, its own settings and its own promotions. So the results diverge.
Same pickup, same destination, same minute, and yet different prices. This is not a glitch: it follows directly from how the apps set their fares.
A price calculated on demand
A ride has no list price. When you enter your trip, the app calculates a fare from the distance, the estimated duration and current conditions. That price is shown to you before you book.
Dynamic pricing
The factor that moves prices the most is the balance between demand and the number of drivers available around you. When many people order at once and few drivers are free, the price goes up. When demand drops, it comes back down.
Typical situations: rush hours, rain, the end of a concert or a match, public transport disruptions, weekend nights.
Each app sees a different market
This is where the gaps appear. Each app:
- works with its own drivers, who are not all in the same place at the same time;
- sees its own demand, which is not its neighbour’s;
- applies its own pricing settings;
- decides on its own promotions.
Two apps can therefore end up with very different prices for the same trip. In our 26 September 2026 reading, six offers ranged from €26.50 to €47.65.
Personal promotions
Apps send targeted discounts: money off your next rides, a reduced price for a few days. Two people standing side by side can see different prices in the same app. That is why OptiRide lets you link your accounts: the prices shown are then yours.
What about taxis
Taxis in France follow regulated pricing, with a meter and, in Paris, flat fares for airport trips. Their price therefore reacts differently from ride-hailing prices. Depending on the moment, that works in their favour or not. Here again, only comparing tells you.
What it means for you
Since prices keep moving, and move differently in each app, none is the cheapest every time. The only reliable method is to compare when you are about to book. To go further, here are seven habits to pay less.
